It’s traditional when announcing a new release from Oli Heffernan (Ivan The Tolerable/King Champion Sounds/UniversityChallenged) to make a big deal about his prolific output. But that gets old. Let’s just say it’s somewhere between 50-100 releases (depending who you ask) and leave it there.

Given the labyrinthine discographies of some of his outfits, it’s somehow surprising that this is only the second Houseplants release (the first was a cassette released back in 2016 on the much missed Austin,TX label, Monofonus Press). Once again, Leighton Crook (Country Teasers/Arndales/Badgewearer) contributes half-sung / half-recited lyrics recalling everyone from Baron Mordant to Ian Dury, working with backing tracks provided by Heffernan. This time out Heffernan fleshed out the sound with some live drums from Neil Turpin (Bilge Pump/Objections/Yann Tiersen) and synths from Robbie Major (Benefits) - both soon to be part of the live Ivan The Tolerable band with Heffernan.

Houseplants II eludes easy descriptions and soundbites. It’s taut, nervy postpunk in places, Neu-beat chug in others, a shimmering, languid drift on the 12-minute centrepiece Half A Monkey Loser II, all capped off with a torrent of imagery from Crook.

Houseplants II was recorded throughout the lockdown in various places, mixed by studio ninja Anthony Chapman (Collapsed Lung/Arndales) and is released on Win Big!, the Durham label run by Faithful Johannes.

another banger from a band and label you can rely upon. like math rock but softer than that - moth rock? maybe. there's a jerk and flutter to these songs, forever reaching into the light. gnarlier bass chunkiness than before too, but if you're lucky enough to get Oli Heffernan on the squad, you boost that signal. eldudowski
